A tournament of 2 halves as we fought hard with no reward on the Saturday, then recorded 3 wins on the bounce on the Sunday to get to the Shield semi-final only to lose a tight game against the Bobcats in painful circumstances reminiscent of the Red Rose final. Our best 2 performances were against the two eventual winners, we gave the Shield winning Seagulls a tough game on the Saturday and beat the much fancied Formby Fins on the Sunday. The big difference between the two days was we just didn’t get runs on the board on Saturday, on Sunday we suddenly started scoring and reaped the benefits.
Male on base leaders were Jeremy (900), Dave (800) and Michael (789). Sandra (611), Annie (563) and Alyssa (500) led the way for the women. Home Run Heroes were the Downes boys with 2 apiece and Jeremy and Rob who got one each.
In the field everyone worked hard. Amongst other good performances both Jeremy and Dave pitched effectively. Dan played well at short, JD did a fine job in the outfield, Michael showed promise at third, TK was good as always on first, but the stand out performance of the weekend was Sandra in the outfield against the Fins. She took a series of catches that effectively won us the game.

A curate’s egg of a performance over the day. We started off awful but then got better as the day went on. For the first half of the game against the Basehunters we were still in bed, we played better in the last 20 minutes but still slipped to a 6-5 defeat. In the 2nd game we were excellent in the field and ran a star studded Ringers Rippers outfit close going down 3-1. In the last game against Phoenix we sorted ourselves out and won 12-5. With the Rippers having gone 3 for 3 and every other team 1 and 2 our better run difference put us through to the final and a 2nd encounter against the Rippers. We were playing much better by this stage and in a close, well fought, game, despite another slow start with the bats we came within 1 out of a shock victory before conceding defeat on a close play at the plate.
Over the day the female batting leader was TK (600) with guest Jeremy (778) leading the men. Dan was best of the regulars at 667. Michael (3 for 3) and Stewart (2 for 2) led the way in the final. All the games were played in a good spirit and the sun came out for the second half of the day.

Overall we had a successful time at Firstball. We got some useful game time under our belts and the new players played in their first real matches. We put in some strong performances, though five games on the Saturday and an early start on Sunday meant that we looked a bit tired, as well as wet, by the end of the second day!
Guest Neil was the star with the bat, batting 1000 over the weekend. Of the Regulars Tony (889) led the way for the men with Louise (625) best of the women. Neil was also the Home Run King with 4. Dan, Steve G. and Tony also hit one four-bagger apiece. In the field it was the Czech connection that starred with Sandra and TK both impressive. Play of the weekend though was Steve's running, diving, rolling catch on Sunday morning.
A bit of the gloss was taken off the weekend by a nasty injury to Tony's thumb that is likely to keep him out of action for some time. Thanks from all the team to Neil "hitting machine" Foot and old girl Chloe for guesting for us over the weekend.
